popeyeWe wouldn’t have nori for our sushi if it weren’t for phycologist Kathleen Drew-Baker, who discovered that the algae Porphyra has heteromorphic forms, spurring its commercial farming, a billion dollar industry. A fascinating tale.

Popeye preferred spinach to nori. The photo left shows Seaman Marlena Peter aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt working on a mural in the foc’sle. Since doing that, she has been requested to do a variety of artwork for the Navy.
