A happy Friday

June 19, 2020

We still are in the early stage of an epidemic. The initial mitigation measures slowed it. The US failed to contain it. Recent stats are not pretty. It soon may be worse than we yet have seen. Texas now is on the front line.

But, today is Juneteenth. And yesterday, as if to celebrate that, the Supreme Court gave a measure of relief to DACA recipients. It is a narrow decision, that can be got around. I don’t pretend to foresee history’s direction. But let us welcome good news when it comes. Perhaps that temporary respite can be made permanent in 2021. Photo shows Admiral Farragut, on the left looking relaxed, and on the right, General Granger, whose General Order No. 3 was read this day, in 1865, in Galveston. The cursive original resides in the national archives.
