Those smokey lies

May 6, 2019

If you don’t read the Mueller report itself, which doesn’t say what Trump tweets about it, at least read some of the White House lies it documents. Several things stand out. The first, as if we needed yet more evidence, is that Trump lies as naturally as most people breathe, even when the only purpose is to make himself seem bigger in other people’s eyes.

Not only does Trump lie incessantly, but he hires and manipulates others into lying for him. As when he dictated to his son the lie to tell the press about the meeting with the Russians at Trump Tower.

Sean Spicer, Hope Hicks, and Sarah Sanders show as the hired liars. One of the interesting questions with every conman is the extent to which they know they are lying, and are able to separate their own thinking from the lies they push, or become more wrapped into their own stories. I suspect Trump’s lawyers were right that he was a walking perjury trap, so full of his own bullshit he likely would regurgitate it, even when facing criminal penalty for doing so. The Mueller report paints Sarah Sanders as quite conscious of her lies and quickly shedding them when they carry penalty:

The President’s draft termination letter also states that morale in the FBI was at an all-time low and Sanders told the press after Comey’s termination that the White House had heard from “countless” FBI agens who lad lost confidence in Comey. But the evidence does not support these claims. The President told Comey at their January 27 dinner that “the people of the FBI really like [him],” no evidence suggests that the President heard otherwise before deciding to terminate Comey, and Sanders acknowledged to investigators that her comments were not founded on anything.

A real professional.
