Looking back, looking forward

September 7, 2018

Like the better thematic histories, Steven Brill’s story of how the Baby Boomers broke America seems an important part of how we reached our current state. Brill is not a historian, and should not be too much criticized that he gives a view from one perspective. The world is complex, and we ever see it through a few windows at a time. Brill’s story is one that meshes well with Umair Haque’s dark description of the political present, how much authoritarianism will Americans tolerate? The sad answer is that Trump’s supporters will cheer most any degree of authoritarianism, so long as it is more aimed at those they hate or fear or want to control, and so long as it props up themselves, the “real” Americans.
