Looking outward…

July 7, 2017

Right-wing protectionists are wrong when they view globalism as a zero-sum game. The right approach to it is through treaties, such as the one Europe just finalized with Japan, that build in protections for the environment as well as liberalizing trade.

People often have inaccurate views of their own society. Commonly, they overestimate the prevalence of events or groups they view as troublesome. So it is no surprise that Germans are both more liberal and happier than they think they are. Which somehow reminds me of Be Deutsche, which is well worth watching if you’ve never seen it. Both those last two links are from late last year, but somehow appropriate for this week’s meeting of the G20.

For Americans today, looking outward is a welcome break from looking inward. Thank you, Randy Rainbow.
