All too human
It is surprising how much the rising conservatism today is just retread sermons from a half-century past. Robert Leonard attempts to scry the blue-red divide, and recounts a preacher who explains: “The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good.”
But whoever heard a liberal or Democrat proclaim that?
The notion of that divide was preached in sermons when I was young. Those who get just a little beyond Sunday sermons and talk-radio politics don’t think people are fundamentally anything except people. Preachers want to paint the world in colors of sin. Believers want an explanations of those who don’t follow their religion. So the rest of us get turned into warped mirror images of believers.
