Failure of education
It takes mental work to deal with information that conflicts with existing beliefs. Alas, education enables rationalization as well as thought. (Cite.) The diagram left shows that both liberals and conservatives with more knowledge of science have more definite — but opposite — stances on global warming. That linked article, contrary to its own claim, is not much about reasoning, until an aside at the end:
On a brighter note, Kahan told Quartz that his research on people that score well on a measure called “scientific curiosity” actually show less partisanship.
I suspect the agnotologists will be busy for years to come.
