Education: what works vs. what’s wanted
Louisiana’s school voucher program may be popular, but it is proving a failure at helping education. Which surprises no one who has followed the data on these. (Cite.) Elementary school homework also has questionable value.
Too many parents, especially successful parents, worry too much about how to safeguard their children. Education is about stretching the brain. Which is why children learn more in schools with diverse student bodies, rich and poor, black and white, from different backgrounds. Essay writing helps, too.
Alas, the US is headed in the direction of ever more homogeneous schools. It’s what parents want. Jack Schneider, writing on the long-term trends, blames some of that on the false political narrative that public education somehow has been broken.
