The anthropological view that our ancestral species evolved on grasslands, acquiring adaptations for walking, nomadism, and cooperative livelihood gains some support from a 24-million year record of vegetation trends in seabed sediments off east Africa.

Unsurprisingly, our hobbit cousins, H. floresiensis, had been inhabiting their islands from at least 700,000 years past. Which corroborates their lineage as a species in its own right.
