Fascism?

December 2, 2015

Trump’s campaign has rightly generated a discussion of fascism, even if he isn’t rightly a fascist. Doug Muder does a good job of digging into what fascism is, if anything, and what relationship it has to the angry right that is propelling Trump to the top of the GOP polls. Well worth the read, especially after the links from yesterday.

I’ll give my experienced-based definition of fascism: Suppression of (political, social, minority) dissent by violent means by a state agent. “Violent” encompasses killings, kidnappings, torture, jailing, making illegal an activity that would be tolerated if it wasn’t a dissent: publishing, gatherings, etc etc.

In this way, communism as practiced by the Soviet Union was fascist. So were/are all the military dictatorships of the world, as well as policies practiced here in the US, even under democracy.
