Matthew Facciani points out the weaknesses in Jean Decety’s study (blogged below): The effect was small. The measure of altruism was questionable. Many variables were left uncontrolled. Weaknesses shared with many other such studies. It’s important to be able to differentiate between different kinds of studies, and recognize those that are little more than interesting statistical blips. Not just social news, but health news is full of those!
