Immigration facts, immigration fears
From the way Trump and some other Republican candidates are using fears of immigrants, one might think that the US currently is experiencing a surge of illegals crossing its borders. That isn’t the case. “Over the last five years net unauthorised immigration has been zero because the number of illegal arrivals was offset by the number of undocumented immigrants leaving the country,” The Economist explains. The relevant Pew report (pdf) has much more.
Current immigrants are assimilating as well and as fast as in past generations, according to a new report from that National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. That integration includes the adoption of English and, alas, the adoption of bad dietary and exercise habits. Contrary to Trump’s rhetoric, immigrants are less likely than native Americans to commit crime.
