The Lafayette shooting was a hate crime
There is always a margin of uncertainty about the motives of a mass shooter who then commits suicide. John Russel Houser was a political activist who hated feminism, hated abortion, and wrote a long, misogynist manifesto. He went to a theater showing a feminist comedy, and killed two women. The circumstances suggest Houser’s motives as much as they do the Chattanooga murderer Muhammad Abdulazeez’s. Yes, both had mental health issues. Yes, journalism should allow for uncertainty and ongoing investigation. But the news on Abdulazeez frequently references his religious views and likely motive. Why are Houser’s anti-feminist views so less frequently reported?
