In Ireland, too?
Let’s hope that the Irish vote to allow gay marriage is a sign that social liberals are gaining the upper hand in Ireland, as here in the US. In the meantime, celebrate! In the words of cabinet minister Leo Varadkar:
We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality.
Will American libertarians be celebrating? The Koch brothers are fond of calling themselves libertarian. But they have poured millions into religious groups that fight against gay marriage. Factional politics is the likely and plausible explanation of this: the Kochs want to get Republicans elected. But that only pushes the question a little down the road. Why would anyone who views themselves as a libertarian yoke themselves to social conservatives?
