Magical semen and new antibiotics

Microbiologists at Northeastern University have discovered teixobactin, representing the first discovery of an entirely new class of antibiotics in decades. The fascinating thing is that they did this using relatively old-fashioned techniques, figuring out how to grow species of soil bacteria that previously were hard to culture in vitro. That raises hope for more such discoveries.

Salmon sperm has magical properties that could make it useful to scavenge rare earth elements for recycling modern electronics. (Cite.) Though I’m quite fond of salmon, that was a sentence I could not possibly have imagined writing until reading that article.
