Torture is intended to break its victims. But it also does damage to those who practice and advocate it. Andrew Sullivan takes a look at the knots into which CIA officials twist themselves to conjure the intelligence it was supposed to produce. Laura Arbilla points to research showing that people view it as torture when other nations do it, and something less — enhanced interrogation? — when their own nation does.
