MLK, history, and the right

When I was young, and Martin Luther King, Jr. was still speechifying, conservatives were united in their view of him. He was a communist. Anti-American. Not just their adversary, but their enemy. Now, they try to make him one of their own. This is just part of the right wing’s constant attempt to create a cartoon history, every figure wearing a black hat or white hat, and locating today’s political disputes deep into history.
