Terrorism vs. free expression

January 9, 2015

The New Yorker gets just right how to view the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Bill Donohue, of the Catholic League, sees the attack as an opportunity to demand more respect for religion, Catholicism and Islam both. Fie on him. Christopher Hitchens is the right antidote to that.

It’s tempting to tell the religious that if God tells you to murder, you should say “no.” Of course, religion teaches the opposite. In the myth of Abraham itself. And it isn’t just religion that leads people to commit atrocities. People believe in their institutions and and received principles, far more than they ought.
