Race and the media

December 30, 2014

I’ve long thought the fictions people propagate around news events speak a certain kind of truth. Soon after Michael Brown was shot, the right-wing media fabricated news stories about Officer Darren Wilson’s injuries, including faked photos and medical images. That such stories get invented and are believed are themselves important facts about our nation. They don’t reflect on the shooting or Michael Brown or Darren Wilson. They do say something about those who believe and propagate them. And as Tim Wise explains, that bears directly on race.

The good news is that attitudes are changing, as evidenced by the rise in interracial marriages. My own view is that has next to nothing to do with Obama, but instead is just because of generational change.
