Ethanol, shrimp, and marine sanctuaries

June 19, 2014

Obama will announce at the Our Ocean conference his plans to greatly expand the US’s Pacific marine sanctuary. He will be following the steps of Bush, who set aside a large area in the waning days of his presidency. The nation of Kiribati will create a sanctuary the size of California.

Closer to home, the news is not so good. Larry McKinney, executive director of the Harte Research Institute, explains how the renewable fuel standard and ethanol production in the midwest expands the gulf dead zone hurts Louisiana shrimpers. The EPA has reduced the 2014 renewable fuel standard. Alas, I suspect the midwest senators stand in the way of more permanent correction to this bad policy.
