Women leaving religion

June 1, 2014

Chris Ritter describes the psychological pull of evangelical Christianity, long after she had intellectually discarded it. Heina Dadabhoy, who left behind her family’s Muslim tradition, explains that mixture quite simply: “It’s less that I won’t buy it, which sounds really woeful, than that I can’t.” But leaving religion in some Muslim communities risks more than just parental disapproval. Photo left shows Ernestine Rose, 19th c. atheist, feminist, and abolitionist.
