Median per-capita income in Canada is now higher than in the US, despite the fact that the US has a higher average per-capita income. Mike Konczal writes an article on the history and practice of social insurance in the US, in particular addressing the conservative-libertarian fantasy of voluntarism as an alternative. Which helps explain why we still are the world leader in class conflict over that.
