Better babies

February 19, 2014

Long-term contraceptives — newer IUDs and drug implants — are more effective than the pill. Partly, because they don’t depend on daily discipline. And their increase in popularity is largely responsible for the recent decline in abortions.

The number of infants born in the US conceived through IVF hit a new record, now accounting for more than 1.5% of all births.

Reproductive technologies will continue to improve, both birth control and fertilization. Much to the ire of religious conservatives, reproduction will become more and more something planned for its own sake, not a happenstance side-effect of sex. And that is a good trend for families.
