Mexico rattles foreign sailors

January 11, 2014

Mexico’s recent crackdown on tax evaders included a ham-handed move against foreign-owned vessels, complete with armed marines. Sailors who did not immediately have the proper paperwork for a temporary stay there had a lien placed on their vessel. Or even those who merely weren’t on their vessel when the marines came calling, as Latitude 38 reports. American boaters likely spend tens of millions of dollars a year visiting Mexico. As the first article well notes:

Mexico may be punishing some of its biggest boosters — visitors who return each year and keep marinas and boatyards in work.
