On teaching

A molecular biologist who moved from research to teaching science in high school discusses the challenge of teaching. Including, especially, the common notion that it is an easy thing.

A Florida teacher gets schooled in religion and history and law, after making the child of a Jehovah’s Witness recite the pledge of allegiance. From someone who presumes to teach about our nation, this kind of ignorance is inexcusable: “no religion says that you can’t do the pledge.” Long before the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Quakers refused to make oaths and pledges.
