Simplicity and complexity

September 30, 2013

Regarding a recent advance in particle physics, many people are attracted to the nice photo left. This article in Quanta Magazine nicely describes its importance, and how it resulted from the painstaking and stepwise refinement of algorithms used to calculate probabilities for particles observed from interactions, until the end result was something computationally tractable, and the basis for new theoretical understanding.

If physics can hope for theoretical unity and mathematical purity, biology cannot. Even the notion that we each carry our own, singular genome has to be qualified by the variety of ways that organisms are genetic mosaics.
