Living in a different world

There are many government programs where I hate to see tax money spent. But medical care for expectant mothers and newborn infants? That is one area where I’m happy for my tax dollars to go. Ushering in the next generation is a first-rate example of how to “promote the general welfare.” The right sees things differently.

When I was a child, my father would let me play most any school sport, excepting football. His politics were slightly to the right of Genghis Khan’s. But as a neurosurgeon, he saw the results of many a concussion, some on the field. Today’s right wing thinks concern about head injuries is all a liberal conspiracy intended to bring an end to football.

Ta-Nehisi Coates takes a closer look at the notion that the 1960s destroyed the black family, looking at data that goes back a century more.

Tom DeLay avoids jail. The prosecution is appealing the decision. But DeLay is correct to view himself as mostly home free. Still crazed. Still crooked. Likely, not destined for jail.
