Though the homes in Bay Head, New Jersey, were flooded by the rising water’s Sandy brought, they were saved from the worst of the water’s destruction by a sea wall that had been built in the 19th century, since buried by shifting sand, and long forgotten. The storm exposed parts of the sea wall, shown left.
