The GOP’s minority outreach

April 23, 2013

Former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer and unnamed party consultants now admit that the voting laws there were put in place purposely to discourage voter turnout, black turnout in particular, and from no concern for voter fraud:

It’s done for one reason and one reason only. … ‘We’ve got to cut down on early voting because early voting is not good for us.’

They never came in to see me and tell me we had a fraud issue.

I know that the cutting out of the Sunday before Election Day was one of their targets only because that’s a big day when the black churches organize themselves.

North Carolina is following suit.

Perhaps Rand Paul deserved some credit for going to Howard University. He would deserve more if he recognized that the early history of the GOP is not news to students, and were more honest about how things have changed. Photo shows Paul Weyrich, founder of ALEC, which spearheaded these laws.
