Saba has legalized gay marriage, and performed the first such in the Caribbean. The rest of the Dutch Indies will follow. Island cultures are weirdly insular and metropolitan at the same time. This wouldn’t have happened without the legal ties to the Netherlands, but I suspect will quickly become a part of the culture.

NY Magazine has an article on the growing popularity of the modern IUD, and the evangelical fervor of young women who use them. “It’s like being a man.”. (Via Andrew Sullivan.)

When Amelia Earheart agreed to marry publisher George P. Putnam, after his sixth proposal, she insisted on a relationship modern by today’s standards, including a pre-nup, and keeping her own name.
