Shell to build world’s largest ship: NG liquefaction plant

May 21, 2011

Shell has committed to building Prelude, a floating LNG plant that will be over a quarter-mile long and displace 600,000 tonnes. The ship will take natural gas from offshore wells, then chill and compress it for transportation by LNG carriers to gasification ports in Asia. This allows the extraction of gas from reservoirs so far offshore or so geographically disadvantaged that building pipelines to them would be prohibitively expensive. The business goal is to supply growing Asia demand from gas reservoirs off Australia. The ship will be designed by Technip and Samsung, for construction in South Korea, and should take five years to complete.
