How quickly religion changes

When I was a child, southern evangelicals were quite concerned about the civil rights movement. That was the culture war then. Abortion? Not so much.

But as much and as quickly as evangelical Christianity changes, ever shifting with the larger culture and how its members align with or against various parts of it, one thing hasn’t changed. And then, as now, they were largely ignorant of the history of their own sect and the origins of the quite modern doctrines they preached.

If I were religious, I would wonder if God is giving evangelicals chance after chance to do the right thing, to right wrongs, to correct course. Yet, evangelicals keep making wrong historic choices. Perhaps they are not so tuned into God’s signals as they would like to believe.
