US fertility is not declining
December 7, 2012
Ross Douhat is the latest conservative pundit worried that the US women are no longer bearing enough babies. He is wrong on the stats. Stephen Bronars takes Douhat (and Tyler Cowen) to task, and digs more into the changes in women’s childbearing over recent years:
More recent cohorts of women are having fewer and fewer children before the age of 25. They are also likely to have more children in their 30’s than their older sisters, mothers and grandmothers.

Is Douhat (like other GOPers before him) trying to enlighten us with his understanding of biology? “American fertility plunged with the stock market in 2008″ Since when does a stock market crash affect fertility? Women are as fertile the day before the market crash as they are the day after. Perhaps GOP men should take female biology 101 before speaking in public.
Now if he was talking about empowered women making economic choices… Now, GOP men need a complete re-education to understand that!!!
